Shimmell will be boxing against Great Britain this Saturday in St.
Louis, Missouri and then again the following Friday in Iowa. Shimmell,
the current U.S. Nationals and Golden Gloves heavyweight champion,
will be part of an elite U.S. amateur team competing in two international
duals. South Haven’s Stacy Harrington will also be competing
as a member of the U.S. team in St. Louis. Both fighters are heavyweights.
This
is the second of three duals between the U.S. and Great Britain:
the first was held last week in Norfolk, Virginia and the third
will be held at the end of this month in Des Moines, Iowa. A different
U.S. team will compete in each. In Norfolk, eight bouts were contested
with the U.S. team winning three and losing five. One of the winners
was Jesse Hart, at 165 lbs, fighting out of the Olympic Training
Center in Marquette.
At
the October 30 dual in Iowa, Shimmell will be joined by fellow Michigan
boxers Ernesto Garza III – the current U.S. Nationals featherweight
bronze winner – and the USOTC’s Trevor Bryan –
U.S. Nationals super-heavy bronze winner – as well as Cleveland’s
Zeddie Adams. Shimmell’s father and coach, Dennis, will be
one of three team coaches for the event.
The
October 24 event takes place at the 10, 600 seat Chaifetz Arena
on the campus of St. Louis University.
