In the “Rez Rumble III” in Mount Pleasant on August 1, KO Boxing presented twenty-two amateur fights with more than a dozen gyms attending, including Soo Canada.

The third annual show was held at the recreation center gym of Soaring Eagle’s Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and organized by KO coach Frank Bailey.

In a reversal of fortune, KO Boxing’s Alex Rosas fought Downtown’s Christian White for the third time – having lost to him at both the state JOs and a club show at Detroit’s Cesar Chavez Academy earlier this year – this time winning by judges’ decision at 70 pounds. In contrast, Rosas’ older brother, Gilbert, had previously defeated David Davis of the same Downtown Boxing gym at the JOs but lost Saturday’s rematch at 75 pounds.

The host club’s other winner was super-heavy John Spanne, who won a points victory over Cory McLean of Little Traverse Bay Boxing Club.

MGGA entered eight boxers with seven recording wins including Tessa Eastman over Joe Byrd’s Alexandria Hoffmey in a female bout at 152 pounds. Three brothers – Valentine, Alfonso and Oscar Gonzalez – won their bouts at 106-, 125- and 150-lbs junior division, respectively, the lighter weights by decision while Oscar scored a second round stoppage.

Olympic gold medalist David Reid (1996 Atlanta Games) accompanied Northern Michigan University’s Aaron Swanson (85-lb junior), standing in for U.S. Olympic Education Center coach Al Mitchell, who was attending the funeral of Vernon Forrest in Georgia. Swanson was stopped in the first round by Big House’s Dashon Crusoe.
