Fighters Win Title Tourney

Five
boxers returned home from the deep south over the Independence Day
weekend with national title belts.
The
three teenagers and two pre-teens were among half a dozen youth
boxers from Michigan that made the trek to northern Mississippi
for the third annual Title Championships held July 1-3, sponsored
by the equipment maker of the same name.
Butzel’s
James Smith, 19, won by points over Canada’s Kevin Lavallee
in the Open, 17-34, 125 pounds bout.
Tony
Harrison-El, 18, of Henry Hank Boxing decisioned Edwin Castillo
of Florida in the prelims and Donald Griffin of Arkansas in the
finals.
Motown
Boxing’s Caleb Chesternut, 12, took a points win over Alabama’s
Israel Chavez and stopped Darren Biggers of Arkansas in round two
of the finals at 75 pounds, 11-12 year olds.
Motown’s
Jelani Embree defeated Nicholas Splawn of Texas by points at 9-10
year old, 95 pounds.
Motown’s
Kyle Rutland won gold unopposed at 100 pounds, 13-14 year olds.
Henry
Hank’s Patrick Boozer competed and lost earlier in the week
but won a non-championship fight on Friday over Edwin Castillo,
who teammate Harrison-El defeated in earlier action.
The three-day event was held this year in Holly Springs, Mississippi,
just across the border from Tennessee by Southern Boys Boxing. Amateur
boxers from some twenty states and Canada participated this year.
