Fighters Survive Quarterfinals at Nationals

After three days of ring action, Michigan boxers and those from the Great Lakes region continue to fight through their competition on their way to national gold at this year’s USA Boxing National Championships.

The first-ever combined Senior Open and Junior Olympics started Monday and runs through Saturday in Denver, Colorado.

Wednesday Quarterfinals

Kronk’s Joseph Bonas won his second tournament bout and 154 pounds with an easy 25-2 decision over Missouri’s Julius Butler in his first national tournament, and his first handful of fights since returning to the sport after legal difficulties. The 15-year old Bonas stopped his opponent in the preliminary round and is believed to be undefeated with some twenty bouts under his belt.

Brandon Love of Kronk won by points in both of his tournament fights with Wednesday’s win at 145 pounds coming versus Justin DeLoach (no residence reported).

2009 National Golden Gloves champ Jordan Shimmell is on track to win his second national gold this year after repeating a points victory over Iowa’s Donovan Dennis. The two fighters met in the ring at last months National Golden Gloves with identical results.

Saginaw’s Ernesto Garza III had his first fight of the tournament and won a 23-16 decision at 125 pounds over Utah’s Jose Haro, Jr. Garza was the 2008 National Golden Gloves champ but has stumbled somewhat in the past year.

Casa De Boxeo’s Andrecia Wasson scored a points victory over Maine’s Lisa Kuronya at 152 pounds, after stopping her previous opponent in round one.

Clinton County’s Taylor Lord-Wilder defeated Tiffany Hearns of Kentucky at 178-lbs.

Fighting out of Marquette: Jesse Hart decisioned New Mexico’s Jesus Correa at 165-lbs while Keola McKee dropped a decision to Fabian Cervantes of California at 106-lbs and super-heavyweight Trevor Bryan lost to Eric Reza of Texas.
