As the 2009 National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions heads into the semi-finals, sixty-one boxers remain in position to take home a championship ring. Of those, ten are nationally ranked by USA Boxing.

Just a day earlier, heading into the quarterfinals, following three days of preliminaries, 30 ranked boxers entered the ring and two-thirds were eliminated. That’s a tough day at the office.

The Colorado-New Mexico team had the most boxers starting the day with five. At the end of the day, that team was down to two, the same as teams from Michigan and California. No other team had more than one ranked fighter still in the competition.

By franchise:

Michael Ruiz of California is ranked #3 at 112 pounds.
Dorian Anthony of California is ranked #2 at 178 pounds.
Louie Byrd of Colorado-New Mexico is fighting at 112-lbs but is ranked #1 at 106-lbs.
Robert Rodriguez of Colorado-New Mexico is ranked #2 at 125 pounds.
Ernesto Garza III of Michigan is ranked #4 at 119 pounds.
Jordan Shimmell of Michigan is ranked #10 at 201 pounds.
Shemuel Pagan of New York Metro is ranked #5 at 132 pounds.
Stephen Young of St. Louis is ranked #3 at 106-lbs but fighting at 112-lbs.
Errol Spence of Texas is ranked #2 at 152 pounds.
Kevin Rivers of Washington, DC is ranked #8 at 119 pounds.
