The second day of competition has ended in this years National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions with more Michigan-based boxers advancing while, for others, hopes of returning home with a championship ring were quashed.

Seven boxers from the state of Michigan competed with four moving forward, slightly better than the 4-2 ratio from Monday, as regional Golden Gloves winners from across the country competed in Salt Lake City’s Salt Palace.

Preliminary bouts conclude this evening and those boxers that have not yet fought are expected to tonight..

Michigan super-heavy Kyle McNutt from Sugar Tony Rosario’s Boxing Club left the ring after a unanimous decision win over Rocky Mountain’s Adrian Farmer. This is McNutt’s second NGG tournament.

Jose Bernal, the youngest member of the team, dropped a unanimous decision to USA Boxing’s #2 ranked Errol Spence of Texas at 152 pounds. This was the Saginaw boxer’s second appearance at the national championships.

Vernon Washington of Saginaw lost a 4-1 decision in his first national Golden Gloves attempt. Washington is one of three boxers from the same gym on the Michigan team. He lost to David Thompson of the New York Metro franchise at 178-lbs.

Detroit

Leandre White of the Kronk Gym defeated Tri-State’s Travis Hanshaw in a 152 pound bout. The unanimous decision victory comes in White’s second NGG tourney.

Erick De Leon, also of Detroit’s Kronk Gym, similarly won a 5-0 decision at 132 pounds versus Chicago’s Leonard Arguelles in the 17-year old’s first NGG attempt. De Leon is the current national Junior Olympics and Silver Gloves champion, as well as Ringside World champ.

Defending 201 pound National Golden Gloves champion Craig Lewis moved up to super-heavyweight this year and won a medical walkover from Kansas-Oklahoma’s Jerome Turner.

Dynamic Boxing’s Dwayne Williams was stopped by Wisconsin’s DeRae Crane in the second round of their 178-lb fight. It was Williams’ first national tournament. His opponent trained until last year at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Marquette and is currently ranked #6 by USA Boxing.
