Southwest Detroit Hosts Outdoor Show
Posted: May 2, 2009

Southwest Detroit (SWD) Boxing Club’s first club show was held today at the Cesar Chavez Academy High School.

Taking advantage of the beautiful, clear day ten fights took place in an outdoor ring at the school just blocks from SWD’s gym in southwest Detroit’s Mexicantown, amidst celebrations for Cinco De Mayo.

The host club’s most experienced fighters, Alejandro Aguilar and David Jasso, both decisioned their opponents. Aguilar and Flint FWC’s Darrion Lawson fought for the sixth time, in a 125 pound bout. Aguilar, who had National Golden Gloves hopeful Erick De Leon working his corner, won by UD giving him the upper hand in all but their first meeting five years ago at the ’04 Junior Olympics.

David Jasso, a recent convert to the SWD gym, won a tough fight with Isidro Flores at 119 pounds. The Los Hurricanes’ Flores traveled from Ft. Wayne, Indiana to give Jasso a workout, but came up short losing the decision but going the distance despite two punches in the first round that backed up the Indiana teenager.

SWD’s Juan Sanchez stopped newcomer Gilbert Rosa, 11, of Mt. Pleasant’s KO Boxing in the afternoons first contest. Rios received an 8-ct in the second round after a barrage in the neutral corner and another in the third after another barrage in the opposite neutral corner was waved off by Referee Ron Cunningham.

Two other boxers from Southwest were less fortunate than their teammates both losing decisions to Joe’s Boxing fighters. Ossie Johnson won over Jesus Lopez at 165-lbs and Shane Neckel got the nod from the judges over Davelle Smith in an 80-lb battle.

Joe’s coach, Todd Riggs, left immediately following his two fighters’ victories so that he could make it to a Toledo PAL show where he had several other boxers competing.

Downtown Boxing Club continues to dominate any card they appear on with four fighters on the ten-bout card and all leaving the ring after having their hand raised by Referee Ron Cunningham, who officiated all ten fights.

Cortez Todd won handily over FWC’s 70 pounder Leon Lawson; Christion White, younger brother of Kevin White, defeated Alex Rosa, brother of Gilbert, at 65-lbs; Kevin White stopped Azteca’s Johnell McEachron at 132-lbs in a bout that saw White down on the canvas twice – one was a knockdown and one ruled a slip – and McEachron earned 8-cts in both the second and third round before the fight was waved off by Cunningham; and David Davis won by decision over Azteca’s Deshanare Warren in a 70-lb bout. In the latter, Warren lost a tooth early in round two but the determined fighter showed heart continuing even though the fight did not go his way.

In an 80-lb bout, Motown’s lone boxer, Caleb Chesternut, won over Azteca’s Daz Watkins, leaving the Pontiac group 0-3 for the day.
