Austin
Watkins Wins 4th Golden Gloves Title

For
eleven-year old Austin Watkins, his first fight set the tone for
his amateur career. He fought Ohio’s Ke’Shawn Dixon
in a 75-lb novice bout at the 2006 Toledo Golden Gloves. He left
the ring with his first win – a unanimous decision –
and his first championship title.

This
month, in his first fight of the year, the 14-year old boxer from
Joe’s Boxing Club in Monroe, walked away with his fourth
straight Toledo Golden Gloves championship title, this one at 112-lbs.
It
took seven scheduled bouts and six fights (he won by walkover last
year after Carlos Suarez was unable to make weight) for the Monroe
youth to win the four championships. Watkins also won the 2006 and
2007 Michigan Jr. Olympics and was unopposed at the ’07 Silver
Gloves.
Watkins
was one of eleven boxers from Joe’s Boxing Club to win at
this years Golden Gloves tournament.
