For eleven-year old Austin Watkins, his first fight set the tone for his amateur career. He fought Ohio’s Ke’Shawn Dixon in a 75-lb novice bout at the 2006 Toledo Golden Gloves. He left the ring with his first win – a unanimous decision – and his first championship title.

This month, in his first fight of the year, the 14-year old boxer from Joe’s Boxing Club in Monroe, walked away with his fourth straight Toledo Golden Gloves championship title, this one at 112-lbs.

It took seven scheduled bouts and six fights (he won by walkover last year after Carlos Suarez was unable to make weight) for the Monroe youth to win the four championships. Watkins also won the 2006 and 2007 Michigan Jr. Olympics and was unopposed at the ’07 Silver Gloves.

Watkins was one of eleven boxers from Joe’s Boxing Club to win at this years Golden Gloves tournament.
