Seven bouts were scratched in the hours between weigh-ins and the medicals, as the first full day of action prepared to get underway at the 2009 Metro Detroit Golden Gloves, seemingly repeating what started at last nights prelims when half of the scheduled eight fights were cancelled. Before the day was out two more fights were cancelled but 25 would still take place at the Gibraltar Trade Center in Taylor.

In bout #6, Andy Whitceomb was a head taller than his fellow Casa DeBoxeo boxer Hector Reza, which may have helped him to carry the fight and win his first championship in the Junior C class at 110 lbs.

In the Intermediate C class 132 pound bout between Warriors’ Michel Vargas and Casa De Boxeo’s Josh Hetterscheidt, Vargas looked determined, banging his gloves together before starting the first round. A nose bleed for Vargas in the second round was enough to cause referee Jer McLaren to bring to the attention of the ringside physician, who allowed the fight to continue. Thankfully, for Vargas, as he got the nod from the judges.

Fred Matthews and Zaven Perez both became entangled and took a tumble to the canvas in round #2 of their 132-lb Intermediate-C bout. Perez took the decision and a win in his first ever fight.

Jonathon Terry of the Detroit Boxing Jungle was in control of the first round of his 145 pound Senior bout with Warriors’ Cristobal Sanchez and the pace continued in round two enough that referee Ron Cunningham put an end to it by RSC.

Lance Rogers, the son of boxing promoter Billy Summers, who fights for the Kronk Gym and Tony Green of Dynamic Boxing battled at 125-lbs in the sub-novice class. Rogers dominated the fight forcing Green to take two 8-cts in the second round before being knocked to his knees in the third and earning an RSC from referee Ron Cunningham.

Boxer Josh Ivezaj worked the corner of Dynamic club mate Brandon Myers in his sub-novice fight with Coleman Young Recreation’s Victor Turner at 132-lbs. Ivezaj is not competing in this years tournament, saving himself for the JOs next month in Port Huron. Despite the assistance, the win went to Turner.

U of M’s boxing program saw losses by all four of its entrants, three by points and one by walkover: David Macari lost to Louis Goodall of Motown at 152 lbs, Novice; Sean Quigley lost a decision at 165-lbs Novice to Kronk’s Stacy Bruner; Rocky Babcock lost to Dynamic’s Sinan Fradi at 178-lbs Novice and Cameron Hawkins handed a win to Antoine Peters of Dynamic when he chose not to compete.

Hamtramck’s Andriy Stankevych and Southwest Detroit’s Ali Eljahmi were the first fight of the open class of the day. Stankevych had to step back twice in the third round, the result of hard punches from Eljahmi who advanced from a walkover yesterday. In a close decision, the win went to Stankevych by split decision.

Perhaps the most anticipated fight of the day was the 152-lb open class bout between Henry Hank’s T. Harrison El and MASH’s Brandon Colston. Anyone that had seen the southpaw Colston in action and thought it would be an easy fight were taken by surprise by a game T. Harrison El. The two exchanged hard blows for a long three rounds with Harrison heeding good advice from trainer David Lester to take the fight to the body, something most amateurs forget to do. What was no doubt a tough decision for the judges and could seemingly have gone either way went to T. Harrison El.

A near knockdown that was prevented by his back against the ropes cost Ph Salaam El the first of two 8-cts in the first round. Round two saw much of the same while round three saw Love against the ropes taking blow and blow before striking back but when he did he did with effect, costing his opponent his third 8-count of the fight and moments later a wave-off by the ref.

Kronk’s Patrick Booker bowed out before his scheduled 201+ bout with Sean Sedgeman, handing the Dynamic fighter a walkover victory.

Craig Lewis returned to amateur competition after just a month ago having his name appear prematurely on an Earl Thompson pro card in the western part of the state. He told Sportssummary before the pre-bout medical exam that since no pro card has been worked out that he might as well go for another title. And go for it he did.

Lewis entered the ring against A-Square’s super-heavyweight Ryan Rawls. Rawls fell forward no less than four times, the last falling completely on his face without the benefit of his opponent’s legs to hold onto and earning an 8-count from referee Gerard White.

The final fight of day two action saw Dynamic’s Dan Smith and Kronk’s Bryan Townsel in an open class 201+ bout. Smith and Townsel rematched from a Kronk club show two weeks earlier. As he did then, Smith won the decision.

By the time the final fight was over a little after 6:30, perhaps 1/3 of the crowd had disapated from the standing room only it had been hours before, no doubt the best attended Detroit gloves of the past several years.

Local pro boxers Alexis Hloros, Domonique Dolton and Brian Mihtar were in the audience to support the amateur boxers. Action resumes Sunday at 1:00 pm.
