Promoter Grable back in Biz at Barrister Gardens

Promoter Mike Grable was pleading: "I just gotta have one more fight." An unidentified trainer of a boxer who apparently had backed out was busy looking for imaginary lint on his pants leg. Dressing-room matchmaking wasn't going very well and a 12-bout card had melted into just seven bouts. But the crowd didn't seem the wiser, and the seven fights seemed to be a good amount to the rookie ring announcer: "We've got seven action bouts for you tonight, Ladies and Gents!"

Three of the bouts were of the small variety (involving participants only slightly larger than my largest cat), but Grable knew what he was doing: the boxers were matched competitively and he concluded with the evening's best bout in which Kronk's William McElroy had to overcome a losing opening round and batter a determined Azteca middleweight, Calvin Seay.

Seay had landed several overhand, windmill rights in the first and felt so encouraged by his prospects that he raised both arms in a kind of victory proclamation as he went back to his corner after that opening heat. But the Seay onslaught did not seem to overly bother McElroy, and he proceeded to pick Seay apart in rounds two and three as Seay tired. McElroy registered standing eights in both the 2nd and 3rd, almost dropping Seay. Seay didn't do any more arm-raising.

Kronk boxers engaged in six matches, winning four. Kronk boxer Hassan Almashadi, a 132-pounder, appeared on his way to a win in his match with the Downtown Boxing Club's Kevin White, but an apparent broken nose caused the action to be stopped, the night's only contest to be halted within the distance.
