2009 Michigan Silver Gloves Champions Crowned

The 2009 Michigan Silver Gloves championships were held December 6-7 at the St. Vincent de Paul Parish Hall n Pontiac. As they have for the past several years, the Azteca Youth Enrichment boxing team played host for the two-day event for boxers under the age of 16 years.

Seventy-six young state champions were crowned in two experience levels (A & B) in four age divisions (8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15). For the first time, B & C levels were combined, more in keeping with what other states do at their state tournaments, to improve competition. Two-thirds of the champions were uncontested. In total, 118 eligible boxers participated in 43 bouts. Eight champions were females - all in the senior and intermediate divisions. Champions in the "A" class of all divisions except Bantam (novices) advance to the regionals, which will be held January 17-19, 2009 in Ashland, Kentucky. That national tournament will be held the following month in Missouri. .
