Amateur boxers from nearby Windsor, Ontario, Canada competed this weekend in the 2009 Ontario Provincial Championships, which started Thursday and ended tonight, at the Holiday Inn in Oshawa, about 45 minutes east of Toronto.

Border City Boxing’s Alison Hunter, Josh Cameron and Shelby Bialkowski and East Windsor's John Charlton will advance to Canadian Nationals early next year as a result of their success.

Hunter, 30, defeated the All Canadian Boxing Club's Amanda Galle in her only bout of the tournament at 57 KG/125 lbs.

Cameron defeated two opponents to reach the finals – a 25-12 decision over Bigtyme’s Ian Scagnetti in the preliminaries of the 69 KG/152-lb Elite Male Class on Thursday and a 35-11 win over Atlas Boxing’s Dan Caron on Saturday – before dropping a close 16-13 decision to Stuart Boyd of McGrorys Boxing in Sunday’s finals to capture the silver medal.

Shelby Bialkowski went uncontested and will represent Ontario at her Nationals in Edmonton in February. The 14-year old Bialkowski won last year’s Provincial tourney by RSC and went on to become national champ as well. She’ll be looking to repeat this year.

East Windsor Amateur Boxing’s John Charlton won a single bout versus McGrory’s Steven Angle to win the 50 KG/110 lb title while teammate Justin Hocko lost to McGrory’s Rodolfo Velasquez.

Windsor’s Ryan Laprise lost in the finals to Giovanni Dixon of Bigtyme at 81 kg/178 lbs.
