Newcomer Wright Defeats veteran Lawson Allah Wright of Joe’s Boxing Club entered the ring on Saturday at the Detroit Boxing Jungle with an even 2-2 record. Six and a half minutes later, his hand was raised in victory with a decision over a much more experienced Darrion Lawson of FWC Berston.
Lawson did a good job of countering in the third round but by then it was too late, Wright having dominated the first two rounds of their 125-lb bout. The 13-year old Monroe boxer’s first fight was in April, a scant six months ago, which saw an L recorded in his passbook. A month later, having changed from another gym to Joe’s Boxing under the tutelage of coach Todd Riggs, Wright won this year’s Junior Olympics state tournament at 119 pounds. Two more fights evenly split the wins and losses to 2-2 before this weekend’s club show at the Jungle, their second show this year. Eleven clubs attended this latest show at Mike Awada’s Detroit Boxing Jungle, the same night that fighters were pulled in two directions with a club show in Ypsilanti. Three clubs – Irish Hills, Motown and River Rouge – saw all their fighters win, with four, three and two winners respectively while Unity had a bad night losing three to decisions and one by RSC.
