Michigan Boxers Earn Regional Titles

Fourteen
of the state’s amateur boxers added regional titles to their
resumes as they competed and won at this past weekend’s Silver
Gloves regional championships in Ohio.
Boxers,
under the age of 16, from five states comprising Region 2 fought
during the two-day tournament held in Columbus, January 19-20. The
boxers all won state Silver Gloves championships in the open division
earlier this month in Pontiac.
Eight
boxers received byes on Saturday and won their championship titles
with single bouts on Sunday. Alejandro Barbosa (119 lbs, Intermediate)
won with a split decision over Ohio’s Abdul Slaughter; Zach
Shamoun (106 lbs, Intermediate) won a unanimous decision against
Kenneth Thomas, Jr. of Indiana; Dylon Minton (65 lbs, Intermediate)
won versus Derek Slater of Ohio; Moses Taylor (139 lbs, Intermediate)
won a unanimous decision over Fred Wilson, Jr of Ohio; James Taylor
(75 lbs, Intermediate) of A-Square Fight Club won over Ohio’s
Abel Flores; Raheem Alexander (85 lbs, Junior) defeated Indiana’s
Greg McKinney; Tyrone Triplett (125 lbs, Intermediate) won over
Derrick Caudill of Kentucky and Valerie Farley (125 lbs, Senior
Female) won a UD over Ohio’s Pepsi Hinton.
Two
boxers fought both days to earn bragging rights: Alejandro Aguilar
(112 lbs, Intermediate) won a UD over Ohio’s Juan Jones on
Saturday followed by a 4-1 split decision victory in the championship
bout against Indiana’s Anthony Sims, Jr., while Erick DeLeon
(125 lbs, Senior) won Saturday by DQ over Ricardo Branham of Ohio
and won his regional title with a unanimous decision over Damon
Allen of Pennsylvania.
Three
boxers lost in semi-final action on Saturday: Austin Watkins (100
lbs, Intermediate) lost to Jamontae Clark of Ohio; Romelio Garcia
(95 lbs, Intermediate) lost to Montana Love of Ohio and Jermaine
Futrell lost a split decision to Pennsylvania’s Karron Richardson.
Four
boxers earned byes on Saturday then lost in the finals: Adrian Barbosa
(80 lbs, Intermediate) lost to Ohio’s Shawn Tulley; Alejandro
Hernandez (106 lbs, Senior) lost his bout to Pennsylvania’s
Miguel Cartagena; Marco Andrade (139 lbs, Senior) lost by retirement
to Ohio’s Zeddie Adams and Dynamic’s Josh Ivezaj (112
lbs, Senior) lost a split decision to Jamar Boyd of Ohio.
Eduardo
Duran (165 lbs, Intermediate) lost by walkover to Ohio’s Raheem
Hinton.
Four
Michigan boxers were unopposed: Jasmine Hampton (80 lbs, Junior
Female); Maycee Frey (90 lbs, Junior Female); Patricia Reeves (105
lbs, Junior Female) and Tyler Phillips (70 lbs, Intermediate).
In
total, fourty-seven champions were crowned from the five state area:
Ohio, which won the team trophy, had 27 champions (16 were unopposed);
Michigan had 14 (4 were unopposed); Pennsylvania had three (one
was unopposed); Indiana had two champions (0 were unopposed) and
Kentucky had one champion, who was unopposed.
Winners
advance to the national championships in Independence, Missouri,
January 30-February 2.
