Three Win Debuts, Fanslaw
Improves in Monroe
Posted: December 16, 2007
Amateur boxing made a return visit to Monroe’s Links at Lake
Erie golf course Saturday night as Joe’s Boxing Club hosted
its second show there this year. With two other club shows within
a reasonable driving distance – both Pontiac’s Unity
Boxing and Ann Arbor’s A-Square Fight Club hosted shows Saturday
as well – metro Detroit’s fighters were spread thin.
Still, the card featured seven regulation bouts with about half
the bouts being newcomers to the sport.
Despite
a winter storm warning that threatened more than six inches of snow
fighters came from as far as Battle Creek within the state and Defiance
and Lima in Ohio to compete.
The
host club had a good night with four of six fighters claiming victory.
Spyder Boxing of Lima, Ohio had the best ratio with both of its
boxers winning their matches while the three Michigan clubs that
had one boxer each all came up empty.
Joe’s
veteran of the night, 119-pounder Dylan Fanslaw improved his record
above .500 with a third round stoppage over River Rouge Boxing’s
Cody Hopkins. Fanslaw was dominating the match landing a series
of combinations in the first round against his more awkward, less-experienced
opponent before Hopkins’ nose bleed in the third round caused
the fight to be stopped for medical reasons.
Dylan
Minton fell to 5-5 with a split decision loss to Derrick Slater
of Lima, Ohio’s Spyder Boxing Club at 65-pounds.
Four
debuting Joe’s boxers were on the card: Donny Wades and Oakley
Boring, at 60- and 65-pounds respectively, both won their bouts
against Ohio’s Defiance Athletic Club’s Austin Owens
and Kohle Clellan, both of whom had one prior fight under their
belts – Owens with a loss and Clellan with a prior win. At
125-lbs, Lorenzo Pippins skipped the judges by stopping his Sugar
Tony Boxing Club opponent, Mitchell Smith, in the first round after
a barrage of punches seemed to leave Smith dazed.
The
host club’s last debuting fighter had less to celebrate dropping
a unanimous decision to Spyder Boxing’s Matt Golden, whose
experience of six prior fights showed over the newcomer.
Defiance
boxer Charles Miller improved to 1-1 with his first round stoppage
of Jason Hernandez of Casa De Boxeo after a headshot put the 175-pounder
down and out on the canvas.
Pro
fighters from Joe’s Boxing Club in downtown Monroe –
Ryan Wilburn and Wade Tolle, Jr. – were on hand to support
their amateur counterparts. Joe’s next club show is scheduled
for February 9 at Monroe County Community College.
