Thomas, who
shares a name with a famed ex-Detroit Piston "Bad Boy,"
fought as an amateur out of the famed Kronk Gym earning a self-reported
80-4 record. He drew national acclaim after his win at the 2005
Cadet World Championships in England but several losses followed
including the 2006 Under 19 tournament in Kansas City. Feeling
abandoned by his Kronk teammates and coach Emanuel Steward, Thomas
moved to a suburban gym and new trainers.
His first
three pro fights all ended by way of first round knockout. In
June, 2009, Thomas was signed by promoter Lou DiBella.
